There were people who were jealous of him. Who were jealous he had set a foot in an Arena and had gotten out while twenty-three other people had died. He had gotten out, they had made sure his wounds disappeared and they had given him enough money for a lifetime. He wouldn’t die of hunger and he was allowed to go to the Capitol whenever he wanted. People were jealous because they thought he could do whatever he want.

The ones that were jealous hadn’t known him before this year’s games when he had been a mentor for the first time in many years. They didn’t know how he had watched his own brother die, they hadn’t know how he had tried to take his own life.

Could he blame them? No. It was not like he wanted them to know him. Alvin hadn’t gave them a reason to know him. He just locked himself up in his house when he didn’t have to go to the Capitol. It was only normal people forgot he was still there and it was only the recent course of events that had reminded people three didn’t only had Arc and Leslie as victors. Good old Alvin Rhodes was still alive too. Awkward, but still alive.

He was reminded of the fact people slowly started to remember his name when he left his house to go to the electronics room. One way or another, the Capitol always gave him new ideas for little projects. Just walking around was enough to make him think about all those things he could do better.

Alvin kept his gaze fixated on the ground and tried to ignore the whispers while he walked over the streets of district three. It was when he felt someone else’s arm brush against his own, that his head snapped up. He jerked his arm away, almost tripped over his own feet in an attempt to get far away from the person that had just passed him.

A shade of red creeped up his cheeks when he heard the whispers. Weird, awkward, crazy. He tried to ignore it by keeping his head low and walking away. Hands trembling. He managed to take a few steps before he leaned against a wall, taking shaky breaths. Why did he even bothered to get out of his house today?

Sofia never seemed to be in a rush anywhere. Not like everyone else in three who acted like time ran at double the speed. Often it made her roll her eyes. She was just about ready to make her way home from class that afternoon when she had gotten stopped by one of her teachers as she packed up her belongings. Mrs Gustoff had informed Sofia that she had been put forward to gain some experience in a human behaviour lab on thursday afternoons. Her eyebrows had shot up in response. [i]really?[i] she explained internally, before nodding solemnly and thanking her teacher for the great opportunity. Studying behaviour was pretty much the only thing she wanted to do with her life and this was a step in the right direction. The capitol had many behaviourists, Sofia had heard, but she still felt most of the best work came out of three. They were scientists to say the least, and of course, everything they had learnt would be useful to the Capitol. It was important to fully understand behaviour to be able to anticipate and control. She understood that much. They'd done a pretty good job at keeping people in line ever since the bombing of the 100th games.

When she left class, she dawdled through the streets of three. It was built up rather nice, all things considered - three was one of the more wealthy districts, what with all its technology here and there, how could it not be? They lived in a nest full of rich genes, brimming with intellect and curiosity. It was only when Sofia saw someone out of the corner of their eye, with a red, sweaty face and shaking hands, Sofia couldn't help but feel for the poor man. She turned in his direction and slowly moved towards him. Keeping a distance she spoke softly,
"excuse me... sir?" Sofia asked, taking a step forwards, "but are you alright?" she asked, knowing the answer already. "Would you like to move to a quieter area?" She tried not to flood him with questions, she just didn't want to appear stupid.

He was aware of the fact he was standing in plain sight. He still heard the whispers and it made him clasp his hands in front of his ears in an attempt to block everything out. He shouldn’t have gone out on this hour. He should’ve waited until it would be less crowded on the streets. But when was it less crowded, when was it safe to go outside? Never, it was never safe enough.

Alvin managed to block the whispers, but he couldn’t keep every sound from reaching his ears. It was a soft voice that made him open his eyes again, that made him lower his hands slowly. He looked at her, kept his gaze fixated on the blond hair that ran a bit further than her shoulders. The man quietly shook his head when she asked him if he was alright. He wasn’t alright. Of course he wasn’t alright. He wouldn’t be standing here if he was alright, would he?

The victor wrapped his arms around his own body, like he wanted to protect himself. Would you like to move to a quieter area? Yes he would like that. He just didn’t know where to find a place that wasn’t so crowded. His own home, yes, but it was so far away. ”Do you know a more quiet place?” His voice sounded a bit hoarse, like he hadn’t spoke in days. The truth was that he hadn’t spoken in weeks, not since he had come back from the Capitol after the games. ”I would like to go there if you know a quiet place.” The words were nothing more than a whisper while he shifter his gaze to his surroundings. People were still staring, probably trying to figure out what he was going to do now.

”I...I’m Alvin.” It was always polite to introduce himself and while he didn’t have a lot of conversations with people, he still knew how to be polite. He tried to smile, lifted the corners of his mouth a few inches despite the fact he was still a bit shaky.

Sofia's eyes jerked around her, trying to shield the prying citizens from Alvin's view as best she could. What business was it of theirs anyway, why did they care so much about this man? What was he to them? Sofia didn't quite get it at this point. She knew it wasn't exactly a norm to see such a quiet, nervous man making his ways through the streets of three, but it wasn't exactly unheard of, either. District three did seem to have a few estranged minds...

She tried to smile as encouragingly as she could,
"Of course, Sir," she nodded, looking around for the nearest exit. It wasn't until he introduced himself when she truly understood the situation. Alvin..... There was really only one Alvin she'd heard of in district three, and this man did strike up a killer resemblance. "A-Alvin Rhodes?" She said a little shocked, but tried to contain her curiosity. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Sir," She added quickly, her eyes wide. She'd never spoken to the victor before - to any of the victors, really.

She turned sideways, outstretching her hand towards the man slowly, "will you take my hand? I'll get you out of here, to somewhere a lot less crowded, I promise," she said softly. There were so many things she wanted to ask him. A part of her wanted to bombard him with all of her theories, queries and musings. But this wasn't the time. The man was scared, clearly. First, she needed to get him out and make sure he was okay. And then? Then they would talk.

He slowly started to relax a little. His hands weren’t trembling that hard anymore and his breathing had slowed down. Alvin just nodded when the girl seemed to know his last name. It didn’t happen every day anymore that people knew who he was just by hearing his first name. He was an old victor, one that had won years ago. Until last year, people had forgotten about him.

Alvin bit his lip when the girl extended her hand. His gaze slid from the hand to her face and back again. How long had it been since he had touched someone willingly? He just didn’t like to touch people, to feel their skin on his. A frown appeared on his forehead while he tried to decide if he should accept the help or not. The truth was that he needed her help. So he took her hand and set a few hesitant steps forward.

”Where are we going?” He almost felt like a child. Being lead away by someone because he was too scared to move away from the staring eyes of people that were still walking past them. ”I’m...sorry. I’m not used to people helping me.” Most would’ve walked past him without even thinking about asking him if everything was alright.

Alvin's hands were gentle and soft upon her own. It wasn't particularly surprising, given that he came from three - not exactly the most strenuous of districts... but it was hard to disassociate the word victor from "rough", no matter where they were from. Sofia couldn't remember exactly how Alvin had managed to win his games, she remembered seeing clips every now and then, but that wasn't what she was paying attention to.

where were they going? Sofia hadn't exactly thought about that... she wracked her brain as she led him slowly through the crowd. Her grip wasn't too tight on his hand - she didn't want him to feel as if he couldn't escape from her too. She thought about the day she'd met Gauge for the first time, the boy in the park? There was a place near there she thought would be pretty empty around now.
"There's a place just off from perception park I know," she told him, "I go there to think sometimes," and to spy... she thought subconsciously, although she wasn't going to let him know about her favourite pass time. Not just yet.

Sofia frowned,
"There's no need to be sorry," she told him. Really, there wasn't. Surely any decent person would so the same? Victor or not, he was still a person, and no one should have to feel the way Alvin had in the moment. Sofia knew she was doing the right thing, and she didn't care what anyone thought of her for doing it. She hoped they all felt ashamed of themselves.
