It seemed to him that she was giving up on his jab about her working too much by just letting it go without a word. That was a strange turn of events since he was so used to her quipping right back at him when he said anything like that. Though, maybe it was just the fact that they were still dancing and that maybe the music and magic of the night was enrapturing her just as much as it was him. He had never realized how much he missed taking part in this simple night. He hadn't realized how much he enjoyed being just another citizen of District Eight instead of being just Eight's sole victor.

Her lack of a comeback didn't last long as they continued to dance to the old familiar melody. Though, he didn't have much of a comeback as the rise at the corners of her lips caught his attention. Sure, he had seen her smile before but genuine ones seemed so few and far between. Much like with himself. ”The night is still young.” He said it with a joking little grin of his own, saying that there was still plenty of time for him to be chased back home... Though, he was rather enjoying himself and didn't see it happening any time soon at least.

They were silent for the rest of the dance. Though, Kevlar didn't find himself trying to force himself to come up with something to say. Instead he just allowed himself to listen to the music and to let himself enjoy the comfortable silence. Everything always came to an end much like the song that they were dancing to. And then she was stepping away from him. He let his hands fall at his sides, not letting himself think of the fact that he already found himself missing the contact.

She said that she was thirsty after all and he nodded. Was it a way to get away from him? Or was she just agreeing that they should go and get more cider as he had suggested earlier? Luckily, she quickly added on the next question and he knew that she was hoping for him to join her. ”After you.” He spoke with the smallest hint of a smile on his lips before following her to grab another mug of cider then slipping into his coat and outside. ”I forgot how much I missed coming out to this.” He spoke once they were far enough away from the door so he wouldn't be overheard. It was maybe a way of him giving his thanks for her talking him into coming without saying it in so many words...

"Oh is it? Always a challenge." She laughed a little as she gave a few last words to his idea that he could still run away. Lacey knew that he had always been better at the quick quips when they would banter back and forth. And before she knew it they had drinks in their hands and they were going out the door. The blonde gave a nod of thanks as she slipped through the door he had so nicely held open.

Lacey watched the white flakes fall from the sky as she looked upward and then was caught by surprise that Kevlar Weaver was being positive about something. Her cheeks were going to hurt soon if she kept on smiling so much. It was more than she had in a very, very long time. Fake smiles never seemed to hurt. But, it was all worth it.

She took a moment to just pause and think about what he said, she took a sip of her cider and then gave a raised brow. "I think what you are looking for is, Thank you Lacey." Finally, back into her fun attitude, she was less serious now that they weren't touching during a slow and romantic song. It was easier, somehow when she was a foot away to give him crap.

"But, seriously. Just think about all the things you have forgotten you missed. We grow up and get boring. And for you, extra boring in your big house, hermit." She said pointedly. Lacey knew that she worked too much, she was the first to admit it. But, that didn't make her stop. No one had made her stop, until Kevlar. He made her want to enjoy a drink or two after a long day. She had taken a chance to dance to the music. And now, she was just enjoying the moment.

”What fun is it if there isn’t some sort of challenge involved.” He said it with a bit of a chuckle. Indeed he did enjoy a good challenge. He always had. It was why he had been such a bright child, he always wanted to push himself to learn more, to do more. And this has served him well enough. His knowledge had helped him survive. So, it was safe to say that he rather did enjoy challenges. Maybe that was one reason that he found himself so content with Lacey’s company. She was always challenging him in some way or pushing him out of his comfort zone… he refused to admit it, even to himself, but maybe he needed that.

Once they were outside with their mugs in hand, he did something that he normally didn’t do. He actually spoke what he had been thinking without much thought. If there was one thing about Kevlar, he always thought before he spoke but this time the words just seemed to slip out. He looked forward to the street as he realized what he had said, a bit nervous that he had given up too much of himself somehow. Then she spoke after a pause and he looked back at her with a half smirk on his lips. ”Don’t push it Lacey.” He tried for reprimanding but he knew that he fell short when he couldn’t keep that but if a grin from his lips no matter how he tried.

He couldn’t help but laugh, truly laugh when she spoke again. And he had forgotten how it felt to laugh… to actually have a reason to laugh or smile. He hadn’t had reason in so long. ”you’re one to talk Miss Workaholic.” then he looked back to the street again and sobered a bit from his previous jovial mood. ”I guess I have gotten pretty boring though, haven’t I? My childhood self would be so disappointed.” he ran his hand that wasn’t holding his mug through his hair, sending the water from melted snowflakes flying as he did so.

She couldn't argue with that. Lacey had spent most of her teen years and then all of her adult years working. She never wanted the Peacekeepers to see how they were struggling and she wouldn't risk going to the orphanage and so many other horrors that came along with being torn apart. She loved her sister too much. And then, once it had started, she just never stopped. It turned into helping others in the district get the medical help they needed through barter instead of coins. What in the world could be solved with the currency that the Capitol expected? It was so much easier to hand off what they had.

Childhood seemed so far away now. And she was even younger than Kevlar. But, both of them had been thrust into being adults too young for their own good. It was in different ways, but both ways were just as tragic. Just as awful. They had lost part of it. Lacey watched the snowflakes fall and for a moment it dawned on her that she no longer needed to help her sister. She no longer needed to help the people... all of the time. Here they were, in the moment, a moment that was just hers. There was no one else to please. And Kevlar certainly didn't have a sister to tend to right now either.

"Okay, truth time." Her eyes looked pointedly at the victor, but her mouth was still curved upward showing that it wasn't going to be anything too serious. "What is one thing that you never got to do...but wish you had. Nothing depressing. I'll only warn you once." Course, that warning was more for herself. She had a habit of being the one with the depressing outcomes and knowing how terrible the world was right now. But, sometimes they were both to blame. Lacey wouldn't have their fun night ruined by memories of drunk fathers or sick mothers.

"Let's do it." No matter what he said... they were going to. Someone must have spiked the cider - Lacey was feeling all warm inside and adventurous. Maybe time to start a new year differently.

Kevlar hadn't had the chance to save himself and his sister from going to the orphanage... He had no choice but to get the peacekeepers to take his father's body away after he had killed him. Maybe if he had been a little older, a little more devious, he would have instead found some way to hide the body and they could have lived out their lives until he was reaped... Then again, maybe it was better that they had gone there in the end. At least his sister had someone to look after her at least a bit while he was away winning the games. Though, that didn't change the fact that no matter the differences in their stories they had both had to grow up too quickly.

Then Lacey was speaking, pulling him out of his reverie and causing him to turn his face back to her. One brow raised as he realized what she said. She was still smiling... So she couldn't be wanting something too serious from him. Though, it was as he was waiting for her to actually speak that he began to notice that he wasn't feeling quite himself. Everything seemed fuzzier than normal, he felt a little happier... He didn't give it much thought.

What did give him pause was the question that she was asking. What was something that he had always wanted to do? He gave a thoughtful look and then took another big gulp from the mug of cider. Someone had definitely spiked it... Though, he hadn't really noticed and now that the effects were being felt he found that he just didn't care. A grin came across his lips as he looked back into the justice building. Most everyone had left. How long had they been standing out here? But he spotted what he was looking for.

Hanging from the ceiling off in one corner was a bunch of mistletoe leaves. He remembered seeing all of the teenagers or older couples sneaking kisses beneath the plant when he was a kid. His mother had explained to him that it was some sort of tradition from back before the dark days to kiss when under the plant. Kevlar had been too young back then to appreciate the tradition. For some reason it had popped into his mind now.

He reached out to grab Lacey's hand and attempt to drag her along. ”Alright. This is probably stupid but...” And once they were underneath the mistletoe he gestured up. ”I always wondered what was so great about the whole tradition.” Apparently he had drank enough alcohol to not even feel nervous about what he had just said... About what he was suggesting. He was facing her now as he looked down towards her, one hand raising to lift her chin a bit as he gave her a questioning look. ”Unless you have something else crazy in mind?” A half grin found its way to his lips as he leaned down a bit, waiting to see if she would meet him...

Nothing good ever came from "probably stupid" when a patient started to tell the story of how they broke their arm, got a lump on their head, or torn up their best set of clothes. She found herself instantly regretting the idea that she would just go and do whatever it was that he would propose. This was Kevlar she was speaking to, what in the world could he think of that could be stupid. He was smart enough not to get them in trouble, wasn't he?

Lacey was freely pulled where he wanted them to go. She had already agreed that she would go along with it and there was no backing down from it now. She finished her cider on the way, throwing the liquid to the back of her throat and discarding the mug on a passing ledge.

Those blue eyes instantly looked up at the mistletoe hanging above them. She knew of the tradition, he didn't have to spell it out. The funny thing was that it was something she had never bothered with in the past either. It was innocent, right? It was cute and fun and didn't mean a thing. She wished she could spit out the words that this was plenty crazy. Or maybe just a simple laugh and a 'you're drunk'.

But, none of that came out. And he was getting closer. Lacey couldn't deny him now, not with the way she felt when she was in his arms dancing. Not with how warm she felt, her cheeks instantly even hotter when he suggested it. She felt like a kid again, or at least a teenager. That was the goal and he had met it. Her stomach churned with butterflies and she allowed her attention to be tilted upward.

Soon, she was on the balls of her feet and her lips were pressed against his. It had been years since she had kissed anyone at all. She'd forgotten how much she missed it. The kiss wasn't just a second. No, somehow she was stuck there and her hands moved to his shoulders to steady herself. She was afraid to be the first to stop anyway... this had left her speechless.

It was true... Kevlar wasn't particularly adventurous nor was he the sort to do extremely crazy things that might bring the wrath of the Capitol down on his head. But there was still that small bit of him that wanted to do something crazy. Even if it was only borderline crazy. And even if others might not think it was crazy at all. This was Kevlar that we are talking about. He wasn't the crazy nor the reckless type. Though, he hoped that even this little step towards letting loose a bit wouldn't blow up in his face. It had every chance of doing so. He was fully ready to say that he was just joking with her if she had pulled away instead.

Though, as they reached the mistletoe and he leaned down closer to her, she surprised him. Instead of pushing him away, she met his advances and her lips were on his. How long had it been since he had actually kissed anyone? He had had his first kiss when he was only thirteen. It had been quick and experimental but nothing to write home about. Then there had been all of the women he had been forced to be with in the Capitol. But this was different than both experiences. This was actually enjoyable as her lips were pressed firmly against his.

One of his hands raised to tangle into her hair when she didn't pull away right off. His eyes closed. Then her hands were on his shoulders as she steadied himself and his other hand went to her waist to keep her from toppling over. Still she didn't pull away and he found that he was quite enjoying the way her lips moved with his. This was something that he could get used to and luckily, the alcohol was working well to keep any other coherent thoughts from his mind. At least until one of the few people still left in the Justice building bumped into him.

The man seemed drunk, so Kevlar doubted it was on purpose. Though, the fact that he was knocked slightly off balance had caused him to break the kiss even as he had unintentionally tightened his grip on her waist to keep either of them from toppling over. As soon as the man had bumped into them and then wandered off, Kevlar's attention went back to Lacey fully. His dark eyes looked down into hers as he couldn't find words for a minute. He felt like a teenager again. One corner of his lips tilted up as he gave her that little half grin. ”Your turn. What's something you've always wanted to do?” He spoke huskily, barely more than a whisper as he tried his best not to let this be awkward now. Apparently half drunk Kevlar was much better at this stuff than sober Kevlar. Though, that wasn't saying much.

It was the perfect moment. It was like those that make up a dream. Lacey never had that. Her life had been filled mostly with too much reality and nightmares. Dreams were for those who had too much time on their hands. The doctor had filled her life, every minute and every second with something to do so that she wouldn't have these ideas of kisses under a mistletoe. Or time to daydream about that one time when she could remember what it was like for her parents to give her a hug.

But, like all nice things in District Eight, this one was torn away in an instant by a drunk who couldn't keep his footing. Lacey allowed herself to be caught and held up by Kevlar as he tightened his protective feeling grasp. And she might have been a bit angry on the inside that it had interrupted such a nice moment in her life. But, she looked up to Kevlar for leadership. The corner of his lip said all that needed to be said. And Lacey broke out into a light laugh, a real laugh.

Her fingers pressed lightly against her own lips as she stifled some of the laughter in time to hear him ask her the same question back. Lacey should have known that he might pull that on her and she should have had something at the ready. But, how was she supposed to follow up something after he had taken them under the mistletoe, after they kissed. She was still lost in the previous moment and now she had to think of another.

The alcohol had blurred her mind and she couldn't quite come up with an answer. Instead, she had only been able to come up with a stall tactic. "I'll tell you if you can catch me." She shouldn't had been running around in the bright red dress and the shoes that she had chosen. Shoes that had never been worn outside of her home. But, her hand pressed against his arm in a tagging motion before she darted off.

Eyes scanned the open door they had just come in and the stairs and the hallways. The peacekeepers still littered everywhere, but what would they care about a few foolish adults? Lacey giggled as she ran back zig zagging around the tables of the main room and towards the door. She slipped outward and as fast as she could around the corner - giving no thoughts to the fact that outside was a bad idea. Her footprints so clear in the snow as she paused to catch her breath and listen for if he was following.

It was so not like her. But, she was finally a child again.

The few moments when his lips were on hers were the first few moments in so long that he had actually been able to experience some sort of normalcy. In those moments he wasn't thinking about all of the failures in his life or the fact that he was a glorified monster. No, he was just thinking about that moment. And it was nice. Of course, it would have ended far too soon. Didn't all good things? Just luckily he had been able to tighten his grip around Lacey's waist in time to keep her from toppling over and it was only after he was sure that she had her balance once again that he allowed his grip to loosen once more.

He thought that he might have caught some glimmer of anger cross her face for a split second. Though, it was gone as quickly as it had appeared and he was pretty sure that he might have imagined it. She was laughing instead. The sound was soft but it filled his mind and he thought it might be one of the best sounds he had ever heard in his life. It seemed to him that real laughter was rare with someone like Lacey. He could relate but he was glad to be able to witness it now. To be the cause of it.

His grin only grew into a proper full smile when she pressed her hand to her lips in an attempt to stifle her laughter, failing in the process. She seemed to pause when he turned the question on her. Like she was trying to come up with something that she could say, something that they could do. But then she spoke and said he would have to catch her first. He laughed, a true laugh as she then hurried off.

There were eyes on her as she ran through the room and dodged the tables but he didn't care and followed right behind her. She was quick, even in those shoes that she was wearing. And he wasn't quite as agile at dodging the tables and people that got into his way. They were outside before he had managed to catch up. He saw her footprints go around a corner and he slowed his pace a bit as he peeked around the corner to see her trying to catch her breath.

He stepped out around the corner and reached out to snatch her around the waist as her back was turned to him. ”I think you owe me an answer now.” He said jokingly close to her ear. He wouldn't put it passed her to take off running again and to lead him on another chase, so he attempted to keep her in his grasp now. ”Unless you're scared your idea won't be as good as mine was.” He wore a mischievous grin now as he leaned his chin on her shoulder and spoke tauntingly. It was all innocent fun, honestly.
And he was just enjoying being able to just let loose for once.

She had never been great at running in the first place. Lacey would have most definitely died in the games if she had gone in. She might have been able to heal all those around her, but if left to flee from the combat or even the need to wield a weapon... she would have failed. Some say that they just find the strength to do what is necessary in the face of a life or death situation, but luckily, it had never been her own life on the line. Other people's lives, well that was a different story.

Lacey was just about to move again as her breathing slowed some. The hot breaths leaving little visible clouds in the air. She let out a gasp and squeak as Kevlar was easily upon her. She didn't even need to hear his voice to know that it was him. For once, she wasn't worried that the guy trying to grab her might be some belligerent drunk or rude peacekeeper on a power trip. So, she let herself smile and tried to pull away, but not really. She was stuck and somehow okay with that.

"How am I supposed to beat that?" She squirmed some, but was still unable to get out of his hold. Lacey looked over to his head that was sitting upon her shoulder. She couldn't help but smile. She hadn't had this fun in ... well, that she could ever remember. Life had always been one tragedy after another and no time to devote to the more fun things in life. It was a waste of time, it could waste someone's life.

"This may seem hard to believe, but I've never been anything more than boring. My sister always says so." She admits with a nod of her head. It was the truth. Lana was the exciting one. She was the pretty one. She was the spitfire second born and everyone knew it. Lacey had to be responsible and somehow that always ends up being synonymous with boring. But, her lips smirked to the side as she gave a quizzical look. "A snowball fight? Ice skating? Truth or dare? Are you ticklish?"

She had listed off plenty of options, but none seemed as daring as the request to kiss her underneath the mistletoe. And the last one, well that was more of a tactic as she immediately tucked a hand behind her and poked and pinched tenderly at his middle section attempting to see if she could find a way out while laughing.
