The training center was by far Evander's least favorite place to be in the district and it seemed to get worse year after year. He avoided it as much as possible, but unfortunately it was expected of him to pop in every now and again since he was a mentor. Most of the time he let Juno handle it, but then again there was a tiny part of him that wanted to check out the potential tributes and at least get a small feel for what they may need coaching in when it came time for the games to actually begin. As much as he tried not to, he cared about them and wanted to see them succeed...sometimes. Succeeding in such a thing wasn't always worth it. There were many times he wished he hadn't.

Here he was though, perched up on a stack of training mats with his legs crossed at his ankles, observing the last set of tributes that would soon compete to decide which two would be going to be shipped off to the games. It was like picking the prized cow to ship off to be butchered. That's what all of this felt like. Preparing cattle to be sent to slaughter. Make sure they are big, strong, and healthy to send them to their deaths to be enjoyed by others.

He momentarily looked away from the older trainees, his attention caught as he heard the giggle of one of the new twelve year olds as her sparring partner seemed to mess up and fall flat on his face in a rather awkward position. He hadn't hurt himself it seemed, by the way he sat up, laughing himself. Innocence. Innocence that would soon be taken from them. He knew it all too well.

"You won't be laughing when you fall like that and someone stabs you, or a mutt tears your insides out while you are still alive."
The trainer had spoke harshly to him and Leila when they were young and giggling about their little missteps in the early days of their training. He had been right. He wished terribly that he hadn't been. Evander didn't have the heart to break it to the two of them, but his attention had been totally pulled from the people he was supposed to be focusing on. He just stared, lost in memories more than anything.

Mason was in charge of the new "hopeful's" as he called them. It was his job to focus on those young people headed into the selection process for the trials. Yet, this year, the pickings were slim. He hadn't much confidence in two as of late, and he wasn't exactly sure where things were going wrong. He watched from the sidelines as two females began to spar. They each had similar styles, so picking between the two of them would prove to be difficult when it came down to it. Things were easier if one of them clearly failed, but that wasn't usually the case in district two.

From the age of twelve, the children would begin to train. Just across the hall were the young ones - the fresh blood that in 6 short years would be where this lot are now. Well, hopefully not as much as a mess. You see, a new training procedure had been put in place after the last two losses. It as unacceptable, really, Epitaph had been a complete joke and Silvia? Well, that girl shouldn't have been chosen at all! Not to mention last year's set was no better either. Shale may have made it to the final two, and what a commendable loss it was to Circe. It was understandable, he supposed - that girl was fierce as anything. However, no excuse... no, no excuse at all.

His head whipped around to face the youngsters as he barged towards the two of them,
"he's right," Mason said harshly, "don't want to end up like Shale, do you? You two need to wise up." He growled. Before turning to Evander,
"Alright? Haven't seen you in here for a while, good to see ya'," he greeted the man masculinely. Mason was a proper man's man, all in all.

Evander watched the two children scramble up with that guilty, defeated look kids always got on their faces when they were scolded. They muttered apologies to the one who had been training them and to Mason as well, though Evander felt they had nothing to apologize for. Children apologizing for being children...it was just so wrong in so many ways.

He snapped his attention back to Mason as the other man smoke, plastering the same fake smile to his face before speaking. "I'm alright. I have been busy and..." he looked around and shrugged a bit, setting his hands on his knees and simply stretching a bit. "I am sure you and Juno have been covering the place nicely." he added.

It was taking everything he had in him to not tell him off for yelling at the kids. They were kids. They were allowed to laugh and have fun, even in training. It would make things easier on them. Maybe it would even give them a stronger love for life and therefore a stronger desire to win and keep living that life. Not that it mattered. All the laughter would get beat out of them in the games.

"I hear things aren't looking terribly promising this year." He added grimly. It meant that the chances of not losing a tribute again this year were slim and the chances of him coming back from the games even more miserable were high. He wasn't sure if it was harder going in with no hope and losing or going in with all the hope in the world and still coming out on bottom.

Much of Mason's attention had been pried away from the future tributes and rested solely upon the victor. District two tributes had always come out very... samey. Built like bricks, usually, and highly skilled to boot. Evander didn't exactly look well-built, but he had speed on his side, something that larger men than he struggled to gain in a fight.

Mason chuckled,
"Well I supposed it could be a lot worse," he commented, eyeing the trainees to his right, "We still have a lot of work to do," he added, shrugging. Really there wasn't much he could teach them, it was more about them getting their heads out of the asses and getting on with it. Something that was easier said than done. He and Juno had come up with a different plan of action, though, and it had been making a small difference to the way these young ones saw the games. They needed to be prepared, and the only way that was going to happen was if they truly understood what was going to happen once they got into that arena.

Mason sighed a little. Things weren't looking all that great, no, but there was still time. Still hope. He shook his head,
"I don't think this will be our year, y'know, but hey - it's the hunger games - anything can happen!" he exclaimed. There were no real front runners amongst the trainees either. Usually, you'd see one or two kids that were a cut above the rest, but no one special this year. No one deserving.

Evander sighed a bit as he looked around, seeming to be thinking a bit. What he was thinking about though wasn't clear, even to him. His thoughts always seemed to cloud when he was here. Memories he had tried to push far back into his brain always seemed to try and trickle their way to the front here. But he was trying to figure out if he had any useful advice that might help with the trainees a bit.

"Maybe letting the little ones have some fun while they train would help more than it would hurt." Evander found himself saying after a moment, the words seeming to just slip out as he thought about them. He hated the way their spirits were crushed so young. He remembered what it felt like and it wasn't a good feeling. It hadn't exactly made him want to keep training. "A balance between play and seriousness, that can shift more toward the serious side as they get older. Then the desire to train will be stronger. Who wants to sit through a boring math class that is the same day after day? But if you make it more interesting. More fun. Different, you can still teach the same thing, but the kids are more excited and more engaged."

He wasn't sure how Mason would feel about this and honestly he was ready to have his head chewed off. The hunger games were only a game to the capitol. Sure the career districts enjoyed participating in them, but it always seemed to be for a reason other than fun and enjoyment. Except when the occasional crazy ones with a thirst for blood came in. Those ones Evander was even terrified of still.

"It's too late for this year's tributes and even next year's, but like you said. Anything can happen and they may pull off a win." Evander sighed a bit. That would be some miracle, but even then...they would still lose at least one. The cycle was never going to end.

Mason didn't buy into Evander's proposed methods. Babying the kids wasn't going to help. It wasn't going to harden them for what was to come; what they were preparing themselves for. No, Mason would not be doing it. It wasn't how he worked, if the kids wanted special treatment, then they might as well go find someone else to train them.
"Evander, if you want to molly-coddle the kids, you do so on your own time," Mason scoffed at him. It wasn't like Evander spent each and every day working his ass of on this good-fer-nothing "careers". If that's what you wanted to call them. Their focus was lacking because none of them truly understood the seriousness of their role. "Talk to me when you've spent a bit more time around them, yeah?" He'd soon learn how unbearable they all were. Mason disliked the younger ones, much preferring to work with the upcoming hopefuls. The older kids who - he would have hoped - were more focused on the task ahead.

Mason sighed, folding his arms across his chest. His muscles popping as his biceps tensed in that position.
"Those twins... they're nasty pieces of work. Deranged, even... but if they make it through the trials and win? We don't really have much option. Don't reckon they're gonna be team players, though, so we can kiss that career pack goodbye," he spat out in annoyance. Mason had a feeling the worst was going to happen. If the twins won, all hell was going to break lose for district two.

Of course Mason was going to completely shoot down his proposal of being less harsh on the youngsters in order to increase their desire and enjoyment being here and training to be this. To be what he himself was. Maybe he didn't want to inspire the kids to become what he had. It wasn't like he was exactly proud of himself for making it to where he was today. Most of the time he would have rather just died in the arena alongside his best friend.

Yet these kids were going to continue training no matter how they were trained. Two would continue going into the games each time, no matter what he said or did. The least he could do was try and give them more of a chance? He knew that not all victors came back with the same feelings and regrets that he had. "Maybe I will start coming and helping out with the little ones more often then." he said simply. If he found he could handle coming here more that was.

He sighed a bit at the mention of the twins. He hadn't been around the training center much, but word of them had spread enough for him to understand. "Doesn't mean the other careers won't team up and destroy them quickly." he said. He didn't really think that it would be that much of a loss. He never really wished death upon anyone, but...the world would probably be better off without those two. "So this year is already a bust and I get to spend a week with those two creeps. Yay me."

Mason crossed his arm, looking down at Evander,
"Maybe you should do that, by all means... we could use the help!" He had a particular skill in turning every conversation into humour, however, there was a small amount of venom behind his words. Mason held a grudge over Evander for his lack of effort in this training system. Did he want him around? Not particularly, but the victors gave these kids a bit more a drive; seeing your heroes in action. could make anyone more determined. They wanted to be them. They aspired to be just like them. Mason wanted that for his hopefuls, he wanted them to have someone to look up to - he didn't exactly think of himself as a prime example.

Mason couldn't think of anything he'd hate more than spending a week with just the twins. Separately? They were manageable. Together? They were a nightmare.
"I feel for ya' man, part of the job description though, I guess." he shrugged, just glad it wasn't him. Mason cracked his knuckles, and then his neck from side to side. He didn't have high hopes at all for the twins chances, they were cocky, and way in over their heads.

Evander rolled his eyes slightly. "Fine, but if I am here working with them then I get to do it my way and there better not be any judgement for it." he stated, shaking his head a bit. He would give it a try, but he didn't want the students to look up to him. He didn't want anyone to look up to him. He hated himself and everything that he did and he would take it all back in a heartbeat if he could. They were better off looking up to Mason. At least he was fit, sexy, and skilled.

He pushed himself forward off the stack of folded up mats he had been sitting on. "Maybe they won't actually want to be around me much. They seem to prefer the company of each other." he said with a shrug. He could spend his time avoiding them in his room or out with Gideon. He wasn't a bad mentor exactly, not when he was given tributes who weren't psychopaths anyway. The twins were something else. He was even rooting against them. He didn't want them back in the district.

He shrugged and gave Mason a pat on the arm. "Well, guess that is all there really is to talk about then. I have a party to plan for. You're welcome to come." he added, grinning. "My usual pre-reaping bash." He didn't care if Mason came or not, but the offer was there.

Whether Evander liked it or not, there would a lot of judgement for his actions. It's what happened in two, and especially in the training centre. It wasn't just him, either, the other trainers didn't exactly express a great liking for Evander since he'd practically become invisible around the centre. Sure, he'd popped his head through the door every now and then - just to make sure no one had forgotten about him - but other than that? To the trainers, it just came across as lazy. He was a big part of this process, preparing the tributes for the games and he definitely had been slacking.
"Judgement? Well I can't make any promises, you know what they're like in here, but I can say that if you're putting in the time and effort to train up these kids, how you do it is down to you." He shrugged, adding, "you have your way, I have mine." It was a simple as that. Mason didn't have to agree with the way Evander did things, and he certainly wasn't going to change the way he taught just because the little victor suggested it. No, if he wanted to baby them, make training seem like some fun game, he could do so himself. Mason wasn't about to make light of this situation.

There were many underlying tones to Evander's second state. They seem to prefer the company of each other, well wasn't that the truth? They had plenty of mishaps with inter-trainee companionship. There'd been many relationships tear apart a good unit, and jeeze was that a pain in Mason's backside. He hated the idea of them becoming "couples", even if it was for "Capitol appeal". It had been done time and time again, it was a wonder if they would still buy into that crap. Mason thought perhaps they would, the Capitolites didn't seem intelligent, exactly... concerned with hot gossip, fashion and makeup, he doubted they had any brain cells at all.
"Well you never know, they may take a shine to you," he raised an eyebrow, knowing Evander wasn't exactly as scary as Mason usually came across... the fact that he'd killed didn't really make much of a difference to these kids. It was something they grew up aspiring to, not something they might be afraid of.

With a pat on the arm, Mason seemed to have lightened up now,
"a party, huh? Well maybe, if I've got some time I'll swing by man," he replied, not sure if he intended to go or not, he could do with a drink, he supposed. The whole idea of party-planned bemused Mason, he'd rather go and hang out at their tavern, drinking the local liquor some inhabitants of two produced on the sly. Although he assumed Evander would likely have some of the Capitol's good stuff, which he'd only tried a few times in his life. Being close with victors did have its privileges. "See ya then," he nodded, turning back to his trainees, refocusing his attention back on them.

Evander sighed and gave a bit of a nod. He knew that Mason was right and that he was likely to get judgement from the other trainers for not being around much up until this point, but...they didn't get it. None of them had been through what he had. They all had always just been safe here in two, training up the kids to send them to the arena. They were never in it. Maybe then they would understand.

"Well, I hope to at least avoid judgement from you. In return, I will leave you to your own business." He added. It was only fair to let Mason do things his own way and he would handle the little ones as he saw fit. It's not like he had been saying the older kids should be allowed to goof off and play around to begin with. Just the little ones, who still had a different spirit about them. One Evander hated to see crushed.

He laughed a bit. "Yeah right. I haven't even spoken to them yet and I am sure they are already going to hate me." Evander rolled his eyes at how absurd the idea of the twins taking a shine to him was. Other tributes, maybe he could see it, but those two? Not a chance. Evander couldn't say that he would let them. He couldn't exactly promise he would even try to mentor them honestly, but that wasn't Mason's issue to deal with.

"Plenty of drinks and treats. I'm even heading to the Capitol for a quick trip earlier that morning. So, I will be able to grab a few more delicacies I don't normally keep for parties. " Evander winked and stepped away at that. "Good luck with the new lot, Mason." he added, motioning to the tributes as he moved to leave the training center at that. Great, he had committed to coming here more often and actually helping. Why hadn't he just kept his mouth shut?

The End
