Brooks was born with a silver spoon in his mouth or as close to silver as you could get in District 9. His family has owned one of the biggest and most successful farms in the district for years and years. His ancestors worked their asses off to be the most successful, unlike Brooks who was simply born into it. The Hominy family farm started years and years ago with an ambitious young man, a big dream, and a small field of corn that he had just inherited from his grandfather. The thing that set this young man apart was his intelligence. The kid was a genius, a rarity for any of the districts besides 3. From a young age he spent his time researching seeds and how to cross pollinate certain crops to make their genetics stronger. He was able to create crops that were pest and disease resistant and very resilient to the weather.
After his work had been done, it was up to his kids and grandkids to carry on making his dream of owning the most successful farm in district 9 a reality. They were able to sell more crops due to losing less of their yield each year and so they were able to start buying up land from other farmers, employing them to work the land for them. Over the years their land kept growing and growing and their success and money kept piling up as well.
Brooks’ grandfather passed away before he was born, so his father was already in possession of the farm by the time he came along. He was more of a business man than he was a farmer at this point. His father before him had been very much the same way, trying to buy up the farms that he considered competition. Smaller farms were a rarity now, though of course there were the stubborn few who held on. He was determined to get them all eventually, but it was the other large farms he really wanted.
The main one was the Ellison family farm. He pushed and pushed to get them to sell their farm to him. Brooks’ father continued to do the same after his own father was gone. So the two families most definitely did not get along well. Of course he continued to push even more once the Father of the Ellison family mysteriously disappeared and was considered deceased. They wouldn't be able to hold out much longer.
You’d think that everything would be perfect for the Hominy family and they try to portray themselves as the perfect, well off family. To outsiders they seem happy, successful, and well put together, but on the inside it is totally different.
Brooks’ was an only child for the first 8 years of his life. His dad was always so busy managing the farm and trying to get more land. His mom wasn't exactly the best at being a mom. She was still quite young when Brooks was born. His Grandmother was the one who raised him for the first 6 years. A much more down to earth woman who didn't care about the money and all the business stuff. He was a sweet little boy when he was younger and under her care.
His attitude and such didn't come until after his Grandmother passed and he was left in the care of his mother. She was better at parenting by this point, but she spoiled her children in material ways as opposed to spoiling them with love.
Most of her actual attention went to Brooks’ sister, Kaelyn, once she was born. The little girl has always been quite unwell and even with the money the family has there isn't much they can provide for her. Though, as much as Brooks wished he had the attention she was given, he is fiercely protective of her. He is also very good at reading to her, playing with her, and just overall loving her. Brooks is an entirely different person when it comes to her. His true self.
It is not one that the public sees often though, as Kaelyn doesn't get out much apart from on the family’s property near the house. Of course in two years that will change when even Kaelyn has to attend reapings. Her name will always only be in the bowl once though and Brooks takes comfort in that.
For the past couple of years Brooks has been learning the management aspects of the farm. He is also being coached in how to carry himself with pride and to never show weakness. To never let the people below him think he is anything like them. He has few friends and it isn't really clear if any of them truly care for him or if they just follow him around simple because it gains their family favor from his father. Those close to the family earn more than those who are not of course.
Brooks doesn't spend much time at all working the farm, just as his father. He does not like to get his hands dirty. He would much rather spend his time indoors reading books from their ‘library’, a room filled with books collected over the years by the family and kept in the main estate. He reads to his sister often. His other favorite hobby is music. He enjoys singing, writing music, and playing guitar. It's something he is quite shy about though. Kaelyn is the only one he has ever openly played in front of. You could say that Brooks is a bit lonely really, but maybe someday he will find real friends or a friend. Or maybe he will become even more cruel than his father can be when he takes over the farm. Who knows? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
