He had watched the games on the street outside, he had stood there in the rain when their tributes had died. The last one standing from district 10.

Rory.

Cassidy always had been better in remembering names. Since the murder on his family, North seemed to forget things more easily. Or he just didn’t care enough to remember them. He had practically given up his will to survive, but Cassidy didn’t give him a choice. He had to keep going or he would take over his body. He had threatened with it so many times and while North usually replied back that he didn’t care, he started to take care of himself again.

On this moment, he didn’t feel like going to the orphanage yet. Everyone would stare at him either way. Adults who were wondering was was in charge: he or his alter ego. Kids who were just scared because they didn’t know what was going on. Even North didn’t really know what happened. One moment he was alone and the next he could hear Cassidy’s voice in his head.

That was always what he told others, carefully avoiding talking about the murder on his parents, the murder he had witnessed. He never talked about it and everytime they tried to push him, Cassidy would make sure they backed off again.

People tend to like North more. The quiet kid, the one that didn’t say anything if he could just nod or shake his head. It was North who was standing in front of the screen. Hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans, head a bit tilted to the right while he watched the finale. He just tried to find out who would win, observed every move they made and the mistakes that would probably mean dead.

Bear. Aside from his closest family there was no one and nothing Kit loved more than the little puppy. Right now though, he was both frustrated with the thing, scared at the situation he found himself in and exhausted because he had already walked way too far for his still emaciated body to handle on it's own to catch up to the dog.

They had been outside of the house for a bit and Bear had spotted something and taken off. Kit couldn't call his name, and the little guy hadn't learned to stop and look at him yet when he got too excited. Tears were rolling down his cheeks as he looked. He couldn't find him, and he couldn't call his name either. He had gone this way, he knew he had.

"BEAR!?" he tried to yell but it just came out as an undistinguished noise. Not the name that the puppy responded to. They had started to train him to respond to non verbal language, and they had tried to train him to stay with Kit, but he was still such a young little guy and he'd gotten too excited. He was looking at every inch of the road as he hurried along.

In fact he was moving at a snail's pace, but it was as fast as his tired body could manage to move right then. His legs felt like lead and his heart was so full of fear at being somewhere public. where there might be peacekeepers. The white uniform terrified Kit more than anything else and even though he was looking for Bear he couldn't help but to look around in full panic as well.

In his distraction he didn't see the boy standing in the middle of the road and walked smack right into him. Kit may not have been walking fast but the impact, even if not powerful at all sent him sprawling to the ground with a pained squeak and a thud.

One tribute had decided to kill himself, decided he was done entertaining the people in the Capitol. He just took one of the weapons that was meant to kill the others and sliced his own throat. That was a way to spit on the Capitol and its games. It was that easy to take your own life, to put an end to all the suffering. The boy probably would’ve died either way, so it didn’t matter that much. Not to the ones in the other districts, not to the ones that could still bring a victor home.

North heard the scream from the female tribute from twelve, but something else caught his attention. He noticed the dog first, being as curious as the puppy it was. For the first time in a while, a genuine smile appeared on his face. Dogs would never judge you because you were different, because you were broken. That was what North was, wasn’t he? Broken. He was broken, Cassidy was fine.

The dog come first and it was when the pup had disappeared from side again, that the impact came. The boy just had to put a step sideways to regain his balance. The person that had bumped into him seemed to be less lucky. Brown eyes slid down to the man on the ground. North tilted his head to the side again, like he was observing the games again. A few seconds later, and he decided to extend his hand with the meaning to help the other to his feet again.

”Are you okay?” A simple question with less emotion after it than one might expect. He didn’t sound worried or angry. He just sounded - neutral. ”One might wonder how he was able to fall to the ground while he barely hit us. Do you think a bit of wind could actually make him fall down too?” The voice in his head sounded more amused and North just hated him for it. Hated how Cassidy always seemed to think everything was funny.

”Just shut up, Cassidy.” Meant for himself, but spoken aloud. He was so used to being alone, to be able to speak to Cassidy that he didn’t even realize it might make him look crazy in the eyes of the man on the ground until it was already too late. North just shrugged. Everyone already thought he was crazy. One more person wouldn’t make a difference.

Kit really hadn't meant to bump into the guy he had walked straight into. The fall hurt, but that wasn't the reason for the tears still streaming down his face. He had bumped into someone and immediately he was terrified. What if he got punished for this? What if he wanted to hurt him? What if Bear would never come home? What if he did find Bear and couldn't get home? All of these things went through his mind as he panicked. Breathing in short, labored bursts that made him look utterly terrified. He was of course, so that wasn't strange.

He eyed the had wearily for a moment, but the guy seemed nice enough, and Kit had met a few nice people by now and knew not everyone was out to hurt him. So he took the hand and allowed the other to help him to his feet. He shook his head a little as he was asked if he was alright. He wasn't. He was terrified and he couldn't find Bear. He lifted his hand to his throat and shook his head again, trying to communicate that he couldn't speak.

Then he pointed to the ground, made a hand gesture about as high as Bear would have been and tried to use his hand to indicate a wagging tail. Bear's tail was always wagging. He was trying to say he was looking for Bear, or at least a dog. He wasn't sure this boy would understand. Not since he couldn't tell him and might not even understand he couldn't speak. He looked at the other man, knowing he looked a ghost of his twin brother. Skinny and far too pale, but still he was recognizable as looking the same as Fox did. Fox, who wasn't here to help him right now because he had to be in the capitol.

The man on the ground was on the verge of having a panic attack. He could tell because he had been there too, so many times. Cassidy mostly managed to calm him down and that was one of the moments he didn’t mind having a ‘second personality’. It was almost a pity that almost no one else had a voice in their head that could calm him down. Since his family had been murdered, he didn’t have someone else would could calm him down when he was having a panic attack. So he sometimes forgot that some people still had family who took care of them, that they didn’t need a Cassidy. A family, or friends.

North never had been very strong, but the other was skinny enough for him to help him on his feet. As soon as he was sure the man stood steady, he let his hands drop next to his body. Not - okay. He was not okay. That was what the movement with his head meant, right? North tilted his head a little to the right when he gestured to his throat and shook his head. ”Your - throat hurts?”
”He can’t talk.”
”Or you can’t - talk.”

It did made sense. That he shook his head instead of answering his question - instead of explaining why he wasn’t alright. Not that it did take long before he had the explanation he needed. Or before he could try to figure out the explanation he was given. He frowned and it took a while before he thought about the dog he had seen just moments ago. Was he looking for the dog? ”Do you mean a dog? I saw a dog walking in that direction.” He pointed to his right.

Suddenly he had a purpose, something to do. A faint smile curled around his lips while he started to walk into the direction he had seen the dog disappear. ”I can help you find him.” North carefully reached out, meant to support him while they looked for the dog. He really didn’t look like he could walk much further. ”I’ll help you.”

It was when he really looked at him, that he recognized him. The red hair, the structure of his face, the eyes. He looked like one of the victors he used to observe with his sister. The same, but still different. ”Ask it.” North shook his head. It wasn’t polite to ask things like that. Maybe he would ask it after they had found his dog.

When he was asked if his throat hurt he shook his head again, but then before he could try to make any gestures as to try to explain further the boy seemed to be coming to the correct conclusion. Mostly that he couldn't speak. He nodded in confirmation that yes, he couldn't speak. That was the right thing.

Kit's eyes widened in surprise when the boy seemed to understand that he was looking for a dog. He nodded enthusiastically, because he was looking for Bear and he was a dog. He had seen a dog!? He looked in the direction the boy pointed, hope filling his eyes for a moment before his face fell once more. It meant he'd have to keep walking and keep looking, but he was so exhausted and he didn't even know if he could start walking again now that he'd stopped. He had to find Bear though. Bear was his responsibility and what if someone captured him and hurt him like they'd done to Kit? No. He had to find the dog. No matter what.

When the other boy said he'd help him look, relief washed over Kit's face and he managed a weak, but tired, smile. He nodded once more and then accepted the offer of some support when he was offered it. He couldn't make it on his own. His whole body was already hurting from all the moving and the panic and he just needed the help. For someone to even offer was more than Kit could have hoped for.

Slowly, with the help of North, he walked in the direction the boy had pointed. In the direction Bear had gone. If the dog the boy had see had even been Bear. Maybe it was some other dog? No it had to be Bear. They had to find him. Nothing was more important in this moment, not even Kit's own safety. Had the situation been any different he may have been more hesitant accepting the help of someone he didn't know.

As they walked Kit noticed North shaking his head, but he didn't know what that was about. He hadn't tried to say anything or communicated in any way, and even though his breathing was still erratic and he was still very close to panic, he tilted his head a little in question. Maybe it had not been meant for him? But then who had it been meant for?

Sometimes he was glad that Cassidy was here. On moments as this one, he wouldn’t know what to do without the voice in his head, or the person that took over his body once in a whole. On the other hand, Cassidy wouldn’t have been there if his family hadn’t died and when someone would ask him to choose between his family and Cassidy, he wouldn’t instantly know who to choose. Most people probably would choose for their family, but most people also didn’t have a split personality. A personality that helped him survive.

For a moment, he felt more important than he had felt in years. On this moment, he was the only one around who could help the other looking for his dog. Even better, he had seen the dog passing through just seconds ago. It couldn’t have gone far, could it? Dogs always got distracted easily, it surely wouldn’t take long until they found the animal.

North carefully pulled the man’s arm around his shoulder and laid his own arm around his waist so he could support him. He didn’t dare to add too much pressure, almost like he was afraid bones would start to break if he did. The other one just looked far more fragile than he did and North was practically a ghost if he had to believe others.

The smile that had been been curled around his lips, slowly faded when he caught the questioning look after he had shook his head in response to Cassidy’s demand. How was he going to explain that? ”Cassidy wanted to know if you were related to one of the victors. Fox I think? You look like him.” The boy tapped against his head when he mentioned Cassidy, to let him know it was all in his head.

”He showed up in my head after my family died.” Died, not murdered. He didn’t like to tell people they were murdered in case they would ask him if he saw it happen or if they catch to killer already. If they knew he had seen it happen, people started to question why he hadn’t helped the peacekeepers find the killer. The answer was simple: because he hadn’t seen a face. Or his mind told him over and over again he hadn’t. ”They call him a second personality who helps me cope with it.” A soft shrug while they moved further in the direction he had seen the dog go. ”Most people don’t like him.”

Kit would normally have been way more hesitant to let anyone not in his family touch him or even come near him, but he was desperate to find Bear as soon as he could and even though he didn't know the other boy he couldn't help but to allow it. He had to find Bear and the boy had said he'd seen him go past. Or at least a dog, There were loads of dogs in District 10, but mostly they were with their owners and not running around like Bear had been.

The boy was gentle enough in the way he wrapped an arm around Kit's waist and put Kit's arm over his shoulders. Still, Kit was feeling a little nervous about it all. Even with how gentle the boy was being. With Rory it had taken a long while before he'd let him help him out of the woods. Now? Well it had only been a short moment, but that spoke of how desperate Kit really was to find the dog and being him home.

Cassidy. The boy spoke as if this Cassidy was just inside his head somehow. Still he focused on the first question and nodded a little. Her was obviously related to Fox, and he wanted to let the boy know that he or well Cassidy had been right about that assumption. He held up his hands and both of his index fingers to try to say they were identical. The same. Twins. It hadn't been possible to explain ti to Rory, but maybe it would be possible with this boy. People seem to have different levels of understanding of his gestures.

He nodded again as the boy said that Cassidy had showed up in his head after his family had died. He had a slightly sad look on his face. Kit knew what it was like to feel like he had no one. He'd had no one for the nine years he'd been kept captive by the peacekeepers and abused by them. He didn't want anyone else to ever have to feel like that, but he had a feeling maybe this boy did. Maybe he was as lonely as Kit had been back then. That sounded awful, but when North told him they called Cassidy a second personality and that it helped him cope he just gave a nod of acceptance. If that's how it was then that was how it was.

Kit wasn't exactly a normal person either. He couldn't speak, and he was afraid of his own shadow. He got exhausted from just moving into town and here he was having North help him looking for Bear. Who was he to judge? He slowly took a step in the direction North had told him Bear had gone in order to start the moving. Still, he wished he was able to talk more, to properly tell this boy what he was thinking and that it wasn't a problem that there were more than one person in his mind. Not to Kit. He would just take it for what it was and roll with it.
